Different Scales of Solidarity
The drawing series is an alternative way of protest during the national lockdowns for the
pandemic. Protests are shown in different scales from 1/1000 to 1/10 in order to reveal the power of context, diversity and unison both at urban and human scale. Joining the solidarity through drawing enables to connect the protests all around the world despite the lockdowns and also minimizes the risk of virus transmission during the pandemic. Atelier
Bow Wow’s Public Drawing, and Eames Office’s “Powers of Ten” documentary as well as Aldo Rossi’s collective memory are some strong references that helped me to build the idea of the series. The series includes Black Lives Matter protests in NYC, Women’s March in Istanbul, Student and LGBTQ protests in Bogazici University, Reclaim the Streets protest in London and Violence against Asian American protests in Los Angeles. Drawings reveal how
pandemic exacerbated the corrupted institutions in different governments and how citizens take action in the urban context.
Black Lives Matter protests in June 2020 in Times Square reflects the racial inequality in the US healthcare and employment system whereas women protests in Istanbul reveal the corruption in the Turkish family institution as femicide and domestic violence reached the highest rate during the quarantine.

Moreover, the freedom of the academy and LGBTQ rights are violated in Bogazici University by the state during the pandemic which clearly shows the government’s ideology on the education system and human rights institution.
Since the right to protest is still perceived as unlawful assembly by some specific states during the lockdown, “Different Scales of Solidarity'' Project highlights the ways of protest in different cities considering their urban texture and social structure.
